1158 The day before you start a new job

Now, there are probably about a million things going through your head, right? What time shall I get up, what time shall I arrive, what time do I need to leave, what should I wear, what should I take with me, and the list could go on for many pages.

The only thing I can advise is that you prepare as much as you can and then actually take some time to chill out and get your head together. Personally the 3 times I have had a new job I didn’t have a chance to freak out about it. It has all been quite rushed and I have only had a matter of a couple of days to prepare. I have concluded that everything happens for a reason, so I try not to let my nerves get the better of me.

At the end of the day if it is the right job for you then it will work out and if isn’t then it probably won’t work out in the long run.

Here are a few tips I stick to (quite a few):

  • Know your route to the place of work

  • Think about how long it will take you to travel

  • Research alternative routes for emergencies

  • Write the company number down in case

  • Plan to be there about 15 minutes early (it gives you five minutes to faff around before you go in, most companies want you inside and sitting at your desk ready to work on time)

  • Wear layers (you can remove layers if it is a hot environment),

  • NEVER wear new shoes (break them in first),

  • Check any documentation they have asked you to bring

  • Wear a watch so you can keep an eye on the time

  • Be prepared to do a bit of waiting

  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions

  • Say Hi to anyone and everyone (appropriately because you don’t want to sound crazy)

Things to bring with you

  • Bring a notebook,

  • Bring a pen or two, a snack,

  • I like to have some change (there might be a vending machine),

  • Bring some money (in case you are invited out to lunch),

  • Tissues (always handy to have)

  • Bring cutlery (you never know what will be available).

  • Check anything documentation they have asked you to bring

  • Wear a watch so you can keep an eye on the time

  • Bring something to keep you entertained on your lunch break

So, that is the end of my little helpful rant. I hope you enjoyed it. Let me know if there is anything that you didn’t agree with, something that you hadn’t thought of and something very helpful because ya know I am interested to know.
